Still spit-spattering with the posts.

So I'm happy to say that we survived the Christmas Stomach Flu '09. Now grant you, the 24 hour stomach funk kindly had its 24 hours completely involving the hours of Christmas, starting at almost exactly 12 AM Christmas to 11:59 PM Christmas night. No bother. K- and I chose to err on the side of caution and remained under the hazmat tent until Sunday morning. We stayed in, watched movies, played Barbies, read books (we got to 300 with our 100 book challenge) and learned to count to 100.
We busted out of this joint for church, ran home for some gifts and had a lovely lunch date with our friends that will be moving back from Milwaukee in 6 months! In the meantime, we were able to catch up while the girls enjoyed the germ infested McDonald's play area. (Much Purell was used, thankyouverymuch.) After the McD's adventure, we trotted on to Kohl's. K- had received an outfit for her birthday, but unfortunately it was a size too small. We were able to return it (thank you for gift receipts) and I helped K- to pick something out. It took 45 minutes in their minuscule toy department, a few tears and some "no, that is too much" to arrive at the choice of Kohl's version of Bendaroos and a small My Little Ponies Ponyville play set. It rocked Miss K- $2.69 over, which I told her will be her allowance for the week. (It's not that I can't pay the $2.69, but she has to realize that you can't go to the register with not enough money and still come out with your purchases.) In the 45 minutes we spent choosing (she was tired, as I figured out when she fell fast to sleep when we drove away), I wanted her to choose something that would be creative. We have bunches of everything else she was picking. Since the outfit was from a teacher, I wanted to honor her gift giving by purchasing something that she would approve of.
The generic Bendaroos? First, the person who thought to sell wax covered string for $15.00 + a box should get a hearty hand shake. Who knew something so basic and somewhat dumb sounding would work so well for kids? Their profit has to be out of this world! Secondly, K- came home and started to spell with the sticks. (Her idea.) Educational! All those tears rejecting Melissa and Doug stamp kits, Leapster/Leap Frog items, Tinker Bell Magic Wand book, puzzles of all sorts of characters, Crayola play sets, I Spy books . . . all traded in for a box of waxy string, smiles and learning galore! See, a desperate mama digging into the deep, dark recesses of the displays paid off! (I should say that K- is never one to have issues choosing. Clearly, this was a tussle of tired proportions.)
So, we've rescheduled Christmas. We should let Christ know. Today was our first day of reschedule. The play date was to occur yesterday, but since I'm puke phobic, particularly with a family due to set off on an 8 1/2 hour drive in a few days, I wanted to make certain that we were cleared to play. Stomach flu and driving are a really, really bad mix.
Christmas with my family has been rescheduled for tomorrow evening. Mom is making an "I'm sorry that you only got shredded wheat and 4 generic packaged Chips Ahoy-like cookies for your Christmas meal" pot of soup and dessert of leftover something-or-anothers.
Hubs' parents are kind enough to accommodate us for a reschedule for Tuesday night, where we will be having our traditional Christmas morning breakfast for dinner. My MIL had the table set, so I think that she kept it set since no one was going to drop in anyhow.
We've opened our gifts from my sister-in-law already, but we usually wait to do that with my in-law's. K- was itching to find out what was in her package and the LL Bean envelope was beginning to stare me down, too. Turns out that Aunt Kristin, Uncle Tom and the girls sent K- a beading set (funny, since I sent the girls some beaded necklaces I made!), a nail set for pedicures and manicures (complete with french manicure strips) and Set 1 of the Bob Books. K- has really enjoyed picking up the Bob Books, reading cover to cover and feeling like she was accomplishing something. She has liked them so much, that I just scored the second set from Half.com for $5.49 including shipping.
I've kind of been an online ordering fool these last few days. My SIL gave us an LL Bean gift card, so I was able to shop the sale section to find myself a new pair of TEK 2 boots (their version of Gortex and I need them for snowshoe-ing and walking K- to school), gaiters (those cuffs you wear that keep the snow out of your shoes and pants) and a coral skirt to wear with my bathing suit. (I have bathing suit modesty issues.) I was able to use my $10.00 credit from the purchase of my coat, so we still have a fair amount of money left over for Hubs to find himself something lovely. (Though guys don't dig "lovely." Well, most guys. I do work in an art gallery, though . . . ) Hubs insisted that I purchase a new pair of boots. My current pair of Timberlands were originally purchased 13 years ago, when I worked at the old gallery. While they are a lovely oil tanned leather, they have lost some of their waterproofed quality over the years.
So that brought me to today's purchases. My neighbor gave me $150.00 in Kohl's gift cards for Christmas (he also bought Hubs a portable air compressor and K- a couple of big toys). I knew when I saw the gift cards what I wanted to buy. Folks, I need to replace my set of pans. My set of Wearever pans that came from my in-law's served us very well. They were 10 year warranty pans and have lasted us that wonderful 10 years. The teflon is beginning to show a little wear (though not chip chunking into our food, but I don't want to get to that), so I did some research while we were physically at Kohl's. I tapped, flipped, twirled and scoped out every pan set they had. I came to the conclusion that I really did want what I had originally set out for-- a good set of hard anodized Calphalon pans. (The same that I had in the Wearever, just one step up.) I found what I wanted, but knew that the previous days online research suggested that I could purchase them cheaper from my computer chair at home. With $150.00 in gift cards, a 15% discount from My Points, free shipping and my own donation of $34.00, this fine set of cookware will arrive on my doorstep in the next couple of weeks. My old set will go to my parents vacation trailer. Hallelujah and Amen.
I didn't stop there! Hubs was requesting my placing our standard monthly re-order with the Vitamin Shoppe for his work out stuff and for more Oscillococcinum. With sales, an additional online coupon code for $15.00 off $75.00 and free shipping, our $320.00 bill came to $133.00. (No, we never pay close to full price, but it does pay to shop around and online. The surprise $15.00 coupon was a very nice find.)
I love coupon codes! :)
So, that is where we are at. I have to go back to work tomorrow. I get to start resetting the gallery displays from the march of the sale shoppers. This is where I have to truly be creative, as the next few months are rather dry on incoming orders and we are kind of stripped of merchandise. It's okay. It keeps me going.
When people ask me to gift wrap their Christmas sale purchases, I promise to only chuckle on the inside. ;)
Smiles are added in above.
Have a great week!

No red suit here. Santa came in hazmat.

"Mommy? I just puked." Yes. Yes she did.
"Are you okay?"
"Yes. I just had a bad tummy ache. Mommy? Can we still go and do presents at people's houses?"
"No baby. We'll just have Christmas another day."
"Mommy? Will Santa still come?"
"Certainly."
Surprisingly, she missed the bed and while she hit the floor, she did get to the garbage can that we leave right next to her bed.
So, I gave her some Oscillococinum as I figured that it couldn't hurt. She did sleep until 6:45 AM, when she got up ill again.
I felt so bad for this kid!
She decided that she wanted to open gifts and she did that between bouts of illness. No, we did not videotape that part.
Hubs felt bad because after doing K-'s stockings with her (yes two, because the fingerpaints wouldn't fit in the other) we realized that in the hub-bub of illness, Hubs forgot to put my gifts under the tree!
So long story short, we've been home. We've peeked out from under the hazmat tent, but it hasn't seemed like Christmas. I didn't get to give out the gifts that I had purchased. No Christmas breakfast with Hubs' family. No Christmas lunch with mine. No brothers were there to pick on me. I didn't share dish duty with my sister.
I ate shredded wheat and 4 packaged chocolate chip cookies today. I didn't want to cook anything and make K- sick to her stomach from the smell. (That always happens with me when I'm digestively ill.)
Mom would have dropped off a dinner plate, but my siblings ate everything. :( (She scaled back her cooking knowing that we weren't going to be there and my sister's clan wasn't going to eat, but they they ended up eating, leaving mom with just enough food for those in attendance.)
We were able to open our gifts together. We spent the day together. I've taken a few naps. I normally don't nap, but I got no sleep last night. I ended up shaking, cold and feeling as if I were going to be ill. I would fall asleep and be up literally 5 minutes later. K- napped today, too. Hubs worked on making a cape for Darth Vader.
Right now, K- has perked up and is finally playing with her Christmas loot. I hear the doggie park right now. She is laughing, up and functioning. Hubs has run off with the DS that he bought me, playing the Over the Hedge game. (He bought me the Brain Age games and I've played those all day. Hopefully, I will improve my brain age, as it definitely doesn't score at 36.)
So this year we will run alternate Christmas celebrations. We'll be having breakfast dinner with my in-law's on Tuesday evening. We'll be having New Year's dessert at my parents house. We are thankful for the ability to move the holiday, as we have our health and family.
A Merry Christmas to all of you!

Tales from the Trenches: A break is necessary

We celebrated K-'s 6th birthday this weekend, as well as a run to Oglebay to see the lights (I crammed a 2 1/2 hour drive into an hour and 45 minutes-- shh! My foot was heavy.) After K-'s birthday party, I had my Festival Choir Cantata. That meant that I left the house on Sunday at 9:20 AM and returned at 7:30 PM.
The birthday party was a hit!
The Festival Choir was a huge success!
Work has been so busy that I come home a wet rag. I tried to give myself a little pick-me-up with Excedrine Migraine this afternoon and it only backfired and made me fuzzier and slightly nauseated. (I know if I reach past a certain point of exhaustion, it may do that.)
So, I'm going to hop off here tonight and keep crafting K-'s homemade Mommy Christmas gift. I'm making her a bunch of new necklaces. She loves wearing them and I enjoy making some fun little girl stuff for her that is uniquely hers. I have glass beads, Swarovski crystal, freshwater pearls, some great Fimo millefiori type beads, silver beads and some cut glass. Let me see what else I can make for her!
So I'll be in and out. I'll be bouncing in and reading up on all of you when I can. I promise to post about the birthday party, lights and all that. I want to do a nice post instead of slap'em hap'em. You understand, I'm sure!
Have a great week!

Riding the wave that is leading up to the holidays
So much going on.
So much to do.
I'll be scarce for a few days, as there isn't enough of me to get everywhere I need to go and be all sharing on the blog at the same time.
I'll return on Monday.
Have a lovely weekend!

WFMW: Christmas cookie recipes and gift wrap tips

(called Chocolate-Kissed Gingerbread, but I like my name better!)
3 c flour
2 t ground ginger
1 t ground cinnamon
1 t baking soda
1/4 t ground nutmeg
1/4 t salt
3/4 c butter, softened (1 1/2 sticks)
3/4 firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 c molasses (I used full flavor)
1 egg
1 bag Hershey Hug candies
Beat butter, egg and sugar. Add molasses. Add spices, salt and baking soda, mixing well. Add flour little by little until well incorporated. REFRIGERATE FOR 4 HOURS OR OVERNIGHT. I did overnight, as I figured that they probably didn't suggest it for nothing.
Shape dough into 1" balls (a Pampered Chef small scoop is perfect for this), roll in granulated sugar and place on ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake in preheated 350 F oven for 8-10 minutes or until edges of cookies just begin to brown. Immediately press an unwrapped Hershey Hug into the center of each cookie. Remove to wire rack to cool.
Made about 4 1/2 dozen.
Butter Crisp Cookies
(recipe from Shannon at Rocks in my Dryer)
One box yellow cake mix (I used French Vanilla, because that is what I had)
1 egg
3/4 butter, melted
1 cup Rice Krispies
Blend all ingredients together. Dough will be crumbly. Form into tight 1 inch balls and flatten slightly. Bake in 350 F oven for 10-12 minutes. Mmmm. Delicious.
Made about 4 - 4 1/2 dozen cookies.
Red Hot Sugar Cookies
2 3/4 c flour
1 t baking soda
1/2 t baking powder
1 c butter, softened
1 1/2 c sugar
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla (I always use more, so I think I did 1 1/2 t.)
Box of red cinnamon candies
Heat oven to 350 F. (They called for 375 F, but I found that 350 F was a bit more better tuned to my oven.) Mix butter, sugar, egg and vanilla together. Add baking powder and soda. Mix flour in little by little until well incorporated. Pour red hot candies in and allow to mix in well.
-- This recipe calls for rolling and cutting. I'm not a happy roll and cut kind of girl. Cut-out's drive me batty. I decided to bake these using my Pampered Chef Small scoop and they turned out beautifully. Just make sure that after you've placed your scoop of dough on the cookie sheet, give it a little pat to smoosh it down slightly. It'll be happier that way. So will you. You've just saved yourself the hassle of dirtying the kitchen table with flour and whatnot for cut-out's.--
Follow my adjusted directions just above, baking the cookies for 8-10 minutes (I lean on 8, as I don't like crispy sugar cookies) and allowing to cool on a wire rack.
Made 5 dozen.
Fondant
My friend, Rachael, did a rockin' step-by-step post on making fondant. She makes the fondant that you eat like candy. This isn't the slick stuff that goes on cakes. Just check out her post here. You'll see that she has quite a helpful assistant!
On tour:
I'm on tour with the Christmas Tour of Homes. (Or in my case, work and home.) Come on by for a visit!
Smiles in my day:
- Meeting with K-'s teacher this AM to talk about the Christmas party. She was so excited that I bought plates and napkins, instead of using the generic yucky white stuff from the PTA. She was so funny! :)
- I switched shampoo and my hair seems to be behaving better.
- Hubs got up and got rolling at 5:00 AM this morning. He called at 7:11 AM to make certain that we were up. (We were, but it was nice to have him remember us!) He had a conference to attend today.
Have a great day!

Tales from the Trenches: Publicly ill children
Gonna make it a quick one. Hubs needs to go to bed early, as he has a conference tomorrow. I have a nifty story, though.
Sunday School was replaced this week with the children's Christmas play. It was a lovely performance. One of the children started yawning when he sat down on stage. A few minutes later, he walked off stage and went to his mother. (He's 6.) His mother snuggled him up in her lap, covering him up with her coat. A few minutes after that, she was slowly walking with him like she was carrying a sack of potatoes.
The performance went on and I leaned over to tell K- that I thought maybe David had become ill and she said, "No he didn't mom. He is right in the back." He was. His mom was sitting in the last pew. He was standing in the aisle watching.
After the pastor was done with his sermon and the mass exodus began, I saw the mother and her son making their way up the center aisle like salmon swimming the wrong way. I said, "Oh, were we keeping David awake?" in kind of a kidding way. "No, he vomited all over me, himself, the pew and the carpet. I'm just going to get our coats."
Hmm. Really? So, her child was ill and she remained with him in the general public? Ewww. His father was there. Her other son was in the performance, though. She didn't want to miss it.
Maybe her car keys were in her coat pocket, but did they need to remain with the general public?
I'm a germaphobe. Puke freaks me out. Public vomiting really freaks me out. So, I did as any germaphobe in my condition would. I ran to K-'s classroom, pulled her aside, confirmed David's puking episode and told her that if she ate anything at all, she was to thoroughly wash her hands.
"Okay, Mommy." She knows. Oh, she knows.
So, how do you handle such a situation? This is what we do. And because it has happened to us definitely more than once, here is another "what we do."
Smiles in my day:
- Paul, the massage therapist, was back! Our bosses hire him for 10 minute massages for us for the next two weeks. Generally, I can get a good 4 visits in with Paul in a year. Delightful!
Have a great day!

Christmas Tour 2009
Hey! Thanks for stopping in. Since I participated in Boo Mama's Christmas Tour last year and am still rockin' the same decorations, I thought that I might share a bit of what I do for my job. You see, I'm part of the display staff at an art gallery. A large part of my job is decorating for the holidays. Y'all, I'm the tree decorator. So, though I will show you my home tree and some goodies that way, I thought I would share my display handiwork with you.
If you can tell where I work by the photos that I've posted, please o' pretty please with sugar on top, cherries and fake diamonds, please do not leave in the comments the name of the place where I do work. You see, though I love the internet, I also love being a little private about my life specifics. I'm sure you understand! Thank you!

Well, I'm flat out tired. Thank you for stopping by!
Smiles in my weekend:
- K- was WONDERFUL at the tea, even despite of the lovely speaker that went on and on and on. She started when we normally eat and talked about her nativity, each piece of her nativity (there were a lot of additional pieces like a pregnant woman, a soldier, a dog . . . ) and she prayed over each and every one. K- was hungry and tired. My nieces were the same. You didn't hear a peep out of any one of them.
- Hubs' work Christmas party is over. K- had a nice time hanging out with Miss Laurie and her family while I drove 40 minutes to the party. The drive was long, but the food was good.
- The children's performance this AM at church.
- Our choir director seemed happy with our performance this morning.
- Going out as a woman on a mission and accomplishing my goal of picking up makings for goodie bags for K-'s school Christmas party on Thursday.
- Though I went to two party stores and got there a half hour after each one closed (one closed at 3 PM and one closed at 4 PM. It's not like we live on the back 9, so I don't know what was up with that.) I was able to find the Hallmark two-piece Star Wars ornament that I tried to get a few weeks ago. Remember? An irresponsible shopper crammed their cart into my car door instead. (Yes, the two dents still hurt.)
- The passenger window has remained where it needs to be.
- My in-law's feeding me their leftover pork chop and potatoes as I ran through this afternoon. Yum.
- I assembled 22 goodie bags for school, 25 treat bags for K-'s birthday this coming Sunday, purchased the snacks needed and have plans for the other food to be obtained. (6 pizzas and a veggie tray.)
Have a great week!
