Miscellaneous post ahead! This week's menu is a no show. There's a good reason and other fun things you might want to read.

My husband does this.  He decides to go on whacked out, crazy diets.  This one is potatoes and egg whites.  He'll be eating those and I don't have to worry about making him dinner.  This would probably seem pretty sweet so some, but it throws me into weirdness in cooking.

Tonight, while having the strep throat study session with K, I dusted off the pressure cooker and cooked up the frozen chicken breast tenders that I bought from an Amish grocery yesterday.  I threw some carrots in there, got some whole grain noodles rolling and kept everything going while checking math problems.  K and I decided that it would be pasta with pesto night with a side of broccoli slaw salad.  I mixed everything up with the pesto and set it in the oven to bake for just a little while.  I'll be having it for lunch and we'll be having it for Monday night dinner, too.

Meanwhile, Hubs made his potatoes and eggs.  As he was eating, he found that he forgot to wash his potatoes.  He's a little picky about how he likes his eggs cooked, which is why he cooked them himself.

He ran into some dirty tasting bits, though.  Yuck.  Poor guy.

You see, he has resolved to "eat healthier" and to lose some weight.  Admittedly, he and I have put on a few extra pounds since the start of the new year.  Unlike some, we haven't lost it.  It's kind of stressing both of us out, so this new diet of his is more of his Lenten sacrifice.  It's not a bad thing.

We have Ash Wednesday coming up and we have all decided on our Lenten sacrifices.

Hubs-  He'll be giving up evening eating "like a pig" to quote him.  He said he is a stress eater.

K-  She has decided to give up gum.  I admit that she wanted to give candy up altogether, but I did encourage her to give up something that would be sacrificial, but realistic.  She loves chewing gum and though the child gets very little candy, I just didn't see success with that one.

Me-  I won't be eating anything after 7 PM.  It doesn't sound like a big deal, but I haven't had anything since 5:30 PM.  I missed my snack window and decided that I'd start rolling with my sacrifice early.  There is a big grumbly in my tumbly.  I did this last year and it was a good discipline that I continued even after Lent was over.  Obviously, I fell off the wagon with this discipline at some point, though.

Since Smudge is no longer around, we can leave the treadmill up.  Hubs has a TV, DVD player and stereo down in the work out area of our basement.  I have enough to entertain me.  I now need to get on the treadmill and get walking.  The funny thing is that I tried it before and the bounce of the belt made my foot hurt.  I'm going to try in the new Merrell trail running shoes I bought.  If my foot hurts with those (the bounce, not the shoes-- they are great), then I'll switch over to my barefoot Wonder Gloves.  I'll try to resolve that and if my foot hurts, it may on the treadmill regardless and I might just have to deal with it.

Back to the meal thing.  I made Morningstar Chick'n Grillers (I think that is what they are called) and honestly, K hated them.  She even pulled out the, "They taste nasty, Mom," card and she doesn't do that.  I made her help me to finish them and swore that I wouldn't buy them again.

We have a weird week.  Tuesday and Wednesday K goes to the in-law's after school.  Thursday is Valentine's Day (and our 16th anniversary), so I was thinking to crock-pot us a lovely turkey tenderloin.  I have to check that out with Hubs because he may just want a romantic meal of egg whites.  I also have PTA meetings that afternoon that K must attend and studying for tests that night.  Romantic!

We did go to Amish Country on Saturday to celebrate our anniversary early.  Because we're in the midst of trying to tuck some extra money away, we skipped the overnight that we usually try to do at our favorite little inn.  We did have a great time, though.  Here is lovely, but probably not all inclusive list:
1.  K and Hubs checked out the horses as I went into one of the stores.  They came in and told me about the one horse looking like he was talking because he was moving his lips.  Hubs felt the need to fill the lip movement in with a bit of Mr. Ed talk.  They both thought it was the greatest thing.  Of course, the horse was gone when I came out.  No Ed lips for me.  :(
2.  We drove the Yaris and it took 1/2 of the gas of the RAV.  Hubs said that confirms that the Yaris will be our new trippin' vehicle.  Well, except for camping.  Though we pitch a tent and camp without electricity, we don't pack light.  The Yaris would never make it.  We did camp that way in the Tercel once.  That was prior to K.  We also had to sleep in our car one night when a storm rolled through and we had no place to go.  I took the side with the steering wheel and the back seat full of stuff.  I didn't sleep well. Hubs, however, slept better than he had all week!
3.  The breakfast buffet was still up when we got there.  We were all reasonable about the offerings that we took.  It was delicious.
4.  We enjoyed walking through the antique store and seeing that Kool Aid pitcher and cup set that my family saved Kool Aid points for forever to get.  They also still had my old lunch box for sale, but it is all really scratched and banged up.
5.  I bought my dad all kinds of nifty mustard relishes for his birthday.  I realize that this sounds weird, but that's what the man loves.  He needs nothing, so multiple jars of mustard relish he shall get.
6.  We went to an Amish grocery surplus store.  The goal was to see who could find the oldest expiration date.  You see, most of the things in this store are past date.  I have a big issue with dates and admit that most things that hit expiration (with the exception of a few), hit the garbage can.  I did find a pumpkin bread kit, a bag of Ghiradelli chocolates and some Mederma scar cream for that dratted branding incident on my birthday.  (Me vs. my sister's toaster oven door.  The toaster oven won and it was the top of my hand.)  All of my items were in date and cheap!
7.  We drove to visit our favorite antique store, but found that they had closed up shop.  Apparently, they closed October 14th due to the economy.  I found almost all of my Holly Hobbie glasses there. So sad!
8.  As a consolation to the closing, we tried Goodwill.  They had nothing.  We tried the dollar store.  Nothing.   We tried Big Lots.  We hit the mother load.  They had Kashi cereals close to date (some in March) for 75 cents - 1.40 a box.  They also had Quaker Chewy 90 calorie granola bars for 50 cents a box.  (They were close to date, too.)  We came home with 7 boxes of cereal, 4 boxes of granola bars, Veggie Straws, Wasa multi grain crisps and a 5 pound bag of grits (another new thing with Hubs) for $20.00.  Hooray for us!

So there you go.  Tangential.  Miscellaneous.  It's where my brain is at right now.  And laundry.  And a weird story on the news about a horse, false accusations and a car wreck.  :shaking head:

Have a great week!

Snowshoeing anniversary

Hubs and K-

Me and K-
We had a lovely anniversary Amish getaway this past weekend.  We always try to go snowshoeing and were kind of concerned that our typical place would be all melted.  Never fear!  There was still plenty of snow!

We had a great weekend and spent a lot of time just hanging out together.

Happy 14th Anniversary, Hubs!

My people were so nice to me!

We had a lovely weekend!

Since Hubs had the RARE weekend off (he usually works Saturday or a rare Sunday every week), we went to Amish Country. We were on a mission to order K- a new swing set. Hers has been way suffering and shedding major bolts and the only thing that is usable at this point are the two swings and that. is. it. We bought her a 4' x 5' super tower with a three position beam for 2 swings and one trapeze bar. It has a nice long slide and the good news is that it's heavy duty with commercial grade swings and whatnot, so we can play on it, too!

While in Amish Country, we discovered that it was giraffe weekend. There was a 4 month old giraffe from the local farm that needed to be named. We were able to meet little no-name, K- took part in a coloring contest and submitted a name for the critter. The bakery even gave her a free giraffe cookie.

We went to the chocolate factory (made good on our final Teacher Appreciation week gift), the bulk food store and the bakery. We stopped in at the cheese house for Hubs to use the facilities and the line was so long that we decided that a rest stop was all it would be.

The weather was still trying to straighten out from Fridays extravaganza of Festival of Scary Storms, so the wind was high, it was raining and the temperature had dropped. We did an early day at Amish Country then stopped in at DSW on the way to the in-law's.

Y'all I needed a new pair of walking shoes. I mean, truly needed. I had walked through the tread and on to the squishy foam sole stuff. I was able to score a pair of Saucony Grid Excursion TR 4 for $35.00 instead of $65.00. Since they are trail runners, the sole is a bit thicker and heavy duty. I think that these will hold up better for my walks back and forth to the elementary. I was thrilled that I found them on the clearance! Since we were spending it like we had it at Amish (see swing set purchase), being able to replace my whipped walking shoes cheap was a great thing.

We celebrated Mother's Day with my mother-in-law on Saturday evening. (K- and I celebrated with my mom and dad on Thursday night.) While there, she showed me some awesome shoes she found for K- for school for fall. Of course, I looked at Land's End online and found more school stuff. I mean, when you have good leather shoes on sale for $9.99 a pair, that's a great thing. I like for K- to have two pairs of school shoes. That way, if one breaks, we have another as a back-up. I was also able to find her polo dress that is uniform approved for $12.99. So, there I was, spending more money. Argh.

Today, I woke at 6:15 AM with a very eager 6 year old wanting to give me her Mother's Day gift. She made a lovely "stained glass" necklace for me and the kindergarten teachers worked together to make silhouette pictures of the kids. K-'s is gorgeous and I'll be purchasing a frame for it. After the gift giving, K- and Hubs brought breakfast in bed. I had scrambled eggs, toast with butter and cinnamon pear jam, a slice of upside down dutch apple pie and two chocolate/chocolate chip cookies. (K- did the menu selections.) Yes, I ate it all but one cookie.

Hubs bought me a gift certificate to our favorite nursery up the road and has a hanging basket to pick on on Tuesday from his co-worker. That was along with the weekend trips. So nice!

We hit the road early, as we had a two-ish hour drive to Columbus. Hubs wanted to take us to the Columbus Museum of Art. After making the drive, we discovered that about 1/10th of the museum was open. They had a wonderful! Chihuly exhibit, but the rest of the museum was closed for renovation. Hubs was livid. He was in the courtyard dialing as fast as he could to find another destination for us. He took us to the Franklin Park Conservatory and Chihuly Collection. Oh, they had gorgeous gardens with Chihuly installations amongst the plant life. We played, "Spot the Chihuly" with K- all throughout the gardens. We have fantastic pictures, though I admit that only had my cell on me. I left my camera at home because art museums don't want you taking photos. My cell might not be what I classify as a fantastic phone, but it is a rockin' camera that takes GREAT photos. We'll get those transferred off the phones Tuesday evening when Hubs brings whatever cord thingy back from work, but oh. I wanted to lick the Chihuly pieces! They were beyond gorgeous!

We loved the conservatory so much that we decided that would buy a membership (again with the expenditure of money) because we always go to Cleveland Botanical Garden. Between the two, we would have spent more and now we can visit 240 reciprocal conservatories and botanical gardens throughout the states. Since we had let our zoo and museum passes lapse, Hubs feels better that we have been able to pick up someone new to support.

So here I am, typing away the activities of our weekend. I've been rockin' the hazy migraine thing today. It's getting a little bit better now, but I think that an evening of good ole fashioned sleep may be the cure that I'm looking for.

I hope that all of you mothers had a wonderful Mother's Day.

Have a great day today!

Smell my nose breath

My beloved little person crawled into bed with us early Sunday morning and asked me exactly that. "Mommy. Mommy? Um, smell my nose breath." "No thank you, baby." "No really, Mommy [insert her nose moving up toward my nose]. Smell my nose breath." "K-, really, I'm good. No thank you." "But mom, [insert breathing nose now basically touching my nose] smell my nose breath!" "K-, really. I'm good with NOT smelling your nose breath. Your nose breath could be gross and I really don't want to be smelling that right now." My then defeated little person decided that snuggling up was good enough. She opted to keep her nose breath to herself. I was thankful for that.

It was a tough parental weekend. You know those days when you would like to sit at the table and repeatedly bang your head against it for knowing that at least that way you would actually be accomplishing something?

We had the battle of the wills this weekend. Since I can't be put in time out, I would say that I won.

K-'s crabbiness started when she left school on Friday. She was hungry and I had snacks for her to have. We picked my aunt up and took her to Super Wal. My aunt is sight impaired and has mobility issues, so going to the store is not something she gets to do that often. When we got to the Wal, no motorized carts were available at the door we went to. I had to go down to the other door and fetch a motorized cart.

Folks, I had never operated one of those things in my life. I now know why my grandmother runs into everything. Sheesh.

So, K- and I were able to make it back down to my aunt and we went off and on our way. Auntie D- kept remember what she needed when she was on the opposite side of the grocery section. We flip flopped a few times, but got her nearly all that she needed. K- needed to use the restroom in the midst of the flip flopping and the one at the front of the store was closed for cleaning. She did make it to the back and handled all of her business. She was still crabby, though. She was fixated on the fact that she was thirsty. Every 10 seconds she would tell me. As any good germaphobe mommy, the drinking fountains at the Wal are ABSOLUTELY OFF LIMITS PERIOD. I would rather shrivel up from dehydration than drink from a major public fountain. The one at church is pushing it, but I know that one gets cleaned all the time.

I'm sorry, where was I?

Oh yes, Aunt D- and her shopping trip. Y'all, she spent so much time looking and looking in ALL sections of the store that I started fading out and K- finally asked when we were going to go home.

Aunt D- wore us out. It is probably because I have a distinct dislike for the Wal anyhow (watching the movie didn't help that, but I have had a bit of a dislike for quite sometime now anyhow), but it didn't help that they didn't have what I was looking for anyhow.

We dropped Aunt D- off and scooted on home. We started working on the Jesse Tree ornaments that were due on Sunday night for the big ornament exchange party.

Saturday morning began with a true crankensteiner. K- ended up with a few time-out's before we even left for Amish Country. In fact, it put is about a half hour behind where we wanted to be for leaving. That's okay. I made it to Amish Country in record time. No, my truck doesn't have wings but let us just say that the traffic had a good flow in sections. K- was mad that we didn't take the "tiny TV" AKA the portable DVD player. She said that Daddy said that, "She could look out the window and that is just boring!" I went on-line and found some car bingo cards to print out for her. She continued to fit, so I took the privilege of the Leapster going with us and told her that she could take some coloring books and crayons and that was it.

K- was good in Amish Country. We stopped in at the bulk food store, where I fetched things not only for us, but canned items for Christmas gifts, spices for the demo at work, spices and sprinkles for my sister & mom and a variety of food items for our consumption.

We cruised by our favorite restaurant for lunch. We left stuffed. I decided that since they had just ended the breakfast, but still had the breakfast bar items available with the salad bar, that was what I would get. K- and Hubs both got turkey and potatoes. It was the most delicious meal we ever had there yet! I also ate the most wonderful cinnamon roll ever. I'll be dreaming about it for sometime.

After, we stopped by the chocolate factory to finish off Hubs' coworkers Christmas gift (he drew the name of the one real picky person), picked up something for a coworker and a snack (of course) and we pressed onward.

Completely by accident, we took the scenic tour on our way to the vegetable stand. We weren't holding out much hope that it would be open, but we thought we would give it a shot. When we finally reached the hill where they have their sign of availability, they were open and had a lot of great stuff left! They had all kinds of squash (not crook neck or patty pan), pumpkins and mums. We opted to buy orange cauliflower, 5 pounds of potatoes and the bunch of Indian corn that K- loved.

We cruised by the bakery and with the amount of folks there, you would have thought that they were giving things away.

Hubs stopped in at this favorite outdoor boot store with hopes of getting Aquaseal and a hat. Of course after he got home, he discovered that he had more than enough Aquaseal and was able to find his hats that were missing. That's okay. He needed a good hat and he has decided to gift the container of Aquaseal to his boss for Christmas. (What do you buy a single man who needs nothing?)

We made the haul back home and that is where the real fun with K- began. I told K- that she needed to go in to make her bed and straighten her room. When I was working late last week, she opted to use her desk as a dumping ground and things were literally sliding off the desk and onto the floor. That is not okay. She used to always make her bed. I let her slide when getting used to get ready to go to school (I know I shouldn't have and learned my lesson), so she has been bed making resistant. She fussed, yelled, was demanding and giving "if you don't do - -, then I won't do - - ." Um, I don't operate that way. In the end, she had several time-out's, a few triples, a couple of doubles and a single or two. I think that all the 5 1/2 minute blocks ended up adding up to 10 time-out's or so? She also lost TV, and other little belongings.

The need to straighten lopped on over to Sunday, so she wasn't all that pleased. We had our Jesse Tree ornament exchange Sunday evening, and she nearly missed it because of bad behavior. In the end, she pulled it around and was able to attend.

Smiles in my weekend:
- Going to Amish Country with my people.
- Finding great gifts for friends and family.
- The cinnamon roll.
- K- finally cleaning her bedroom BY HERSELF and knowing that it is absolutely her responsibility to keep it tidy.
- Instead of doing laundry on Saturday evening like I should have been, I thumbed through magazines and pulled out lovely recipes. I tried one on Sunday evening. I made a lovely Alfredo sauce (easy) and used my Garlic Parsley noodles that I purchased while in Amish Country. The orange cauliflower was tossed in. Delicious!
- Trying to get back on track with the laundry. Speaking of, I need to excuse myself so that I may deposit another load into the washer.

Have a great week!

An Amish Anniversary

We went on our annual anniversary overnight to Amish Country. We're not too far away, but it's a nice little trip. K- was so excited, that she decided to pack our bag for us. When a 5 year old says that they've packed your bag to go on an overnight trip, rest assured that she has packed only the essentials.
When we stopped by the bulk food store, we hung out and talked to the horses for a minute. The one closest to us was a little agitated. We think that he didn't like being tied to the rail.
When we stopped for Hubs to purchase another lens brush for his binoculars, I got a picture of some folks on their way down the road. They may have been on their way to the Amish funeral that we drove by. We were caught between buggies in a funeral procession to the home while on our way to the store.
Here was our "creature home" for the night. The Carlisle Inn in Walnut Creek. We love this Inn.
K- has claimed her bed already. You can see that her polar bear is resting on the pillow.
Here's the rest of the room. My mother-in-law always likes for us to show pictures of our rooms to her. I don't quite know why. Since I have them, I figured that I would share them with you, too.
My people. They were out looking for more buggies to cruise by. We visited the Coblentz Chocolate Company. It was just next door to the Inn, so why not? I accidentally got hubs hooked on these. Neither one of us like coffee, but these are very tasty. I always said that if they could make coffee taste the way that it smells, I would drink it. Well, these take the way coffee smells, therefore they are good. Too good, actually.
I felt very Pioneer Woman when I took this photo. I felt like I could have been on their ranch. I wasn't though. I was tip-toeing over the road apples to get this shot. Speaking of shot, I heard a gunshot as I was taking this photo but since I was in Amish country, I wasn't concerned. When we were on our way, we did see a few Amish boys on their bikes cruising through the country and one had a shot gun across his handlebars. I'm guessing that may have been where the shot came from.
We participated in the Great American Backyard Bird Count. We went to The Wilderness Center to do our counting.
We saw different birds, but the ones that cooperated with my camera were the Nut Hatch and--
oops-- not a bird here. We did have hungry squirrels.
The Red-bellied Woodpecker. I just love woodpeckers and was thrilled that I got a photo of them. I was able to get some pictures of the Downy Woodpecker, but they were only of the backside.

We had a great time on our anniversary trip. We were able to kick back, relax and enjoy each other's company this weekend. I hope that you had a great weekend, too!

Our last trip o' the year to Amish

We frequent Ohio Amish Country on a fairly regular basis. Every few months we take a day trip. We've gotten the trip down to our favorites, so we can easily do it in a day and be back by early evening. Today is our last trip until February, when we go for our anniversary. We went to stock up and stock up I did! We hit the bulk food store early. I was able to stock up on baking supplies for the upcoming Christmas Cookie Baking Bonanza that occurs every year in my kitchen. I even remembered to get Pearled Barley for soup! I've been missing it! We trotted through the stores in town and it was Christmas Open House Weekend! It was packed, but when you go to the chocolate store and find a BUFFET OF CHOCOLATE!, you know that it isn't such a bad thing.

Look at what I found for a certain little girls stocking:

(My husband is making fun of me for adding a sucker to my blog.)

We stopped by the Amish produce stand, where I unknowingly purchased a partially rotted onion. The money goes to a good cause, though. Actually, they really are nice people and I did realize that I was getting the end of the year stuff. I did score some broccoli and homemade Elderberry jam, though.

We tripped on to the bakery, where we got 4 loaves of homemade bread for 1.29 a loaf. My husband loves it and frankly, you can't touch the mass produced stuff in the store for less than that. I should also add that K- picked out some very rockin' chocolate chip cookies.

We had a really nice day. Anymore, it is rare that Hubs, K- and I all have a Saturday off together. We have Sundays, but right now they are kind of occupied by Festival Choir and the once a month leadership meeting. It was nice to get away, roam around and do a fair amount of window shopping, find some good vittles then trot on home.

After K- and I straighten her bedroom, we might even take in a nice family movie before bed.

Have a great night!
