Haiku Friday: The kitchen floor

Goodbye yucky floor,
1976 gone,
Off to the tree lawn.

Don't worry, the chocolate brown carpet will be going.  The tile and carpeting are original to the 1976 charm that we're doing our best to ditch here at the ole homestead.
Smiles in my day:
- "Mom, I'm glad that I got my teacher and not another one." :)
- Hubs worked so hard on removing the floor today!
- I'm busy fighting allergies or the beginnings of a cold. It has been on a low hover since Monday. Let's hope that it leaves.
- After 5 times through the laundry, I finally got the soup spot out of K-'s brand new pink polo shirt. I might sound like a crazy laundress, which I'll completely admit to, but the neighbor accidentally got a couple of dots of a tomato based soup on K-'s new shirt and it was the hardest stuff to remove!

Have a wonderful weekend. I'll be taking advantage of the extra length and I'll be back on Tuesday. Be safe!

Haiku Friday: The dental unit

My pearly whites,
Grinding, clinching, damaging,
Must have one fixed.

Remember that month long migraine that I had in early summer that finally came down to my clinching and grinding my teeth?  Well, apparently I ground a divot into my tooth, causing a very minor crack.  It can be refilled and stabilized for now, but eventually I will need a crown.  I promised Dr. Rick that I've learned my lesson and that yes, I am wearing my night guard rather religiously now.  Ugh.

On a sunshiny note, K- came through with flying colors.  NO CAVITIES!!!  That is something that the entire office breathes a sigh of relief about every time we visit.  Her crack baby soft teeth are something that all of us hover over, so we give her a fluoride treatment, wipe our foreheads and look toward the next cleaning on March 3.

Smiles in my day:
-  NO CAVITIES!
-  Great dental coverage.
-  The crock pot meatloaf worked, but it is definitely a 4 1/2 - 5 hour cook only on low.  That one I won't be able to leave unattended when I go to work.  Good to know.  It will be one of the things that I make for my mom and dad when Mom is off after her surgery.  Hubs loved it and asked that it be put in the regular rotation.  (Yes, I've made meatloaf before, but the crock pot version was actually much more moist.)
-  It rained!  The plants were looking a little dry.
-  The sheets made it yesterday without getting rained on.  (I know that I was thankful for the rain just above, but when my sheets are out drying and I'm not home, I'd like the rain to hold off.)  I was so desperate to keep my sheets dry (I only have one regular set and one flannel set for our bed.  I'm a bit of a sheet snob, so I'd rather go without than have cheap sheets) that I called the neighbor to be my line runner if the rain came.
-  Laundry all done and hanging on the inside lines.
-  I cleaned today with only the kitchen remaining.
-  Mom is in better spirits today about the upcoming surgery.  She's looking forward to my pile o' books arriving for her and happy that she'll be living by delivered crock pot for a few weeks.  Frankly, mom needed a bit of a break and I'm sad that she has to have major surgery to get one.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Haiku Friday: Growing tomatoes

Giant tomato,
Growing, spreading, attacking,
Guarding our door.
It should be said that I have since had to add another small tomato cage to the tower.  Yes, I have one extra large tomato cage and two smaller tomato cages cable tied together as a large tower to keep our Sun Golds happy.  As you can see from this photo taken about a week and a half ago, she is very happy.  It is loaded with so many tomatoes.  It is nice to go pick fresh tomatoes for K-'s summer camp lunch each morning.

Smiles in my day:
-  Hubs got our light up in the kitchen.  Yes, I'll post pictures on Monday.  It is wonderful!
-  The last day of library group.  It was a fun time and I am glad that I pulled K- out of summer camp a little early to attend.  While she was upset at me at first (it was going to be her turn to go next for the game they were playing), but in the end, she was very pleased that we went.
-  A summer bridge tutor that gives us tips and hints and confirmation that K- is doing normal stuff (like getting b and d still slightly confused and belting out the rare letter backwards.)
-  Giving my nephew his first actual true hair cut.  Little boy has gotten his bangs cut by me before, but I gave him a little boyish hair cut.  My sister was having a hard time letting go of the blond locks, but after the third time of having him called "her" this week, she decided that perhaps she should let me have at it.  He is the first little boy head of hair that I have cut and I don't think that considering that he was a moving target, I really didn't do a bad job.  LeAnne was pleased and that is all that truly matters.  That and L- definitely looks like a little boy now.  I probably trimmed at least 3" of hair off the back.
-  Free movies from the library.  I lay down at night and watch them.  On deck I have Precious, Frost Nixon, a National Geographic program called Inside 9/11 and Appalachia: A History of Mountains and People.  (A PBS series.)  I watched Capote last week and loved it.  Because of a gift that was given to Hubs and me, we watched Clockwork Orange.  If you take that one for what it is worth-- an art flick-- you would be okay.  We were warned that it was a little out there and disturbing.  We can safely say that the purchaser of the gift was not at all aware that her gift was tied to such a film.  If she was, she would have never passed the gift along, nor had even purchased it in the first place.  I admit that throughout my 7 year run through art school, I'm more open to art flicks than the rest, so I didn't find it as unsettling as most others had. I went to too many film nights at school to see students work to be completely taken by surprise.  Sad, but true.  Add 7 years of more critiques than I can count.  Yup.  I'm a bit desensitized to shock value in art.  Still, watch that one with caution.
-  My arm is feeling better.  It isn't completely better by any stretch, but I did sleep with a heating pad and my thumb brace on the right hand.  I took two Advil, which helped some, but not tons.  K- had a bad night though (she's eeked her back at school doing activities on the hard floor).  We don't know if she fell out of bed, had a nightmare or what, but she woke up in big distress.  At first we thought that she had been ill. (She hadn't been.  That one we could figure out.) None of us, including K-, can figure out precisely what happened, but we are hoping for a better night tonight.
-  THE WINDOWS ARE OPEN!  Oh for the love that is all good and right, the temperatures are in the late seventies and that is glorious!  The windows are opened for the first time in weeks.  The air conditioner is thanking us for the break.  Mid-nineties here for a few weeks and we were just cooking.  The breeze.  The leaves rustling in the wind.  The clothes on the line that took a lot longer to dry today because I'm not completely used to the 20ish degree shift.  The humidity is at a human level.  Glorious.  Completely and utterly glorious.

Have a great weekend!

Haiku Friday: Line drying

Clothes hung to dry,
Still toasty from the hot sun,
Drunk from the fresh smell.

Smiles in my day:
- Though panic set in when I realized that the school was trying to get a hold of me to pick a potentially sick K- up, 2 hours after they phoned (my cell and my MIL, not my home phone), I raced up and she was fine. She got very overheated and felt like she would be ill. They cooled her down with some cool cloths, had her lie down for a spell and she is fine.
- We made it through an obnoxiously packed day with no breakdowns. The child ran from 8:30 AM-7:40 PM. That's a long day no matter what the age.
- I enjoyed my free (from the Parade section of Sunday's paper) Strawberry Banana Smoothie from McDonald's this evening. A 12 oz is 210 calories, which isn't so bad, but it does have 44 grams of sugar which isn't so smiley. For free and an evening treat while the girls enjoyed playing in the air conditioned Play Place, it was the right price.
- Spending some time with friends back from Milwaukee.
- I love K-'s summer bridge tutor. She gives me all kinds of wonderful tips, which is certainly what I need. I brought K-'s box of practice words for her to thumb through and she couldn't believe it. She was so thrilled that her kindergarten teacher concentrated so much on word families. She couldn't believe the stack! She also asked me to make sure to break the stack up and not do it all at once with her. I admit, it did get rather overwhelming.
- K- learned about gravity in science camp today. Her team passed the egg test-- theirs didn't break! They sent home a gravity test kit for the kids. It is a pyramid with different cardboard balance items. Check out Mad Science online for more details. I'm sure that they probably have a program in your area. We love their week program and I can't recommend them enough.
- K- and I might be extras in a Hollywood movie on Sunday. No, I won't give details until the movie would release (that would give the entire world my location and I really don't want that), but they did a call out for several thousand extras and my MIL suggested that we go. I've e-mailed the guy in charge of extras and I haven't heard back. Apparently, we get numbers, details on wardrobe and whatnot. How many times in NE Ohio do we get that opportunity? Not that often.

Have a wonderful weekend! We're looking for it to be hot, hot, hot. (Mid-nineties and for us, that's hot.) Stay cool!

Haiku Friday: Weeds

Volunteers of green,
Crowding, blooming, reseeding,
More for me to pull.

Smiles in my day:
- Library group. It was a little corny today, but the kids enjoyed it.
- After library group, K- and I drove out to hook up with Hubs at his work so that we could go with him to help at a parade. K- and I rode on his work float and were candy tossers. We were some very popular people!
- Hubs temporarily putting the kitchen back together, while I cleaned and did laundry. We make a great team!
- Sungolds are ripe! Rachael, K- loves them!!! Thank you for sharing!
- K-'s continued quest to find ripe ground cherries.
- While this isn't a smile in a bigger sense, it was funny. I went to get dressed for work on Wednesday, was water spraying my shirt and when I flipped it, I found that a bird had left me a gift on the back of my shirt that I hadn't seen while I was outside folding from the line. The gunk did come out, but it makes me laugh as one of those things that happens when you use the sun to dry your clothes.
- The tomatoes love the heat and I've had to tie them up because they are flopping over the tops of their cages. The Sungold tomatoes are attacking us as we are coming in the back door.

Have a great weekend!

Haiku Friday: Japanese Beetles

Little beast with shell,
Munching, crunching, destroying,
"Leaf"ing a lace path.

Smiles in my day:
- Library group was an animal guy and the kids loved it! It was so packed that we had to park at Walgreen's next door!
- K- did a great job writing her library book reports. She did a great job reading today.
- Hubs found K- a soccer goal at a local discount store. In the 93 degree heat, they were out having themselves a lovely game.

Haiku Friday

Why not have some fun on Fridays? I've decided to start Haiku Friday. I've never written one in my life or at least my adult life.

Wanna join? A Linky (or whatever it is called) will be up at midnight. Only original haiku's please. Don't want anyone getting mad.

Second post for the day. Read on.
