Being the child of an artist.

K- is an artist's kid.  As such, K- has spent more hours than can be counted at museums and different art events.  This weekend, K- and I went to a local mom and pop shop to see my coworker's senior show.  She wore the dress that she chose at the Goodwill the day before.  It was a crepe, mid-calf dress that was sleeveless and yellow with little flowers.  She had some fabulous silver flip-flop sandals (the ones with the strap and buckle at the ankle) with "diamonds" and the turquoise-esque Fimo beaded bracelet and necklace that we had made earlier in the day.  She presented Miss Carly with a purple iris from our yard, and we discussed the photographs that were on display.  It was a skinny slip of a store, but my coworkers were dazzled by the fact that K- was flipping through the clothing racks along side them, choosing some very interesting styles that she would like mom to wear.  We found out that Matt, another coworker, was involved in a show just down the road and the opening happened to be right after we visited Carly's.  We followed Julia, Michael and Rachael on down to the show and what a show it was.  It was wine bar adjacent, which made me concerned that they wouldn't allow K- in, but since she was the only child in attendance, I think that everyone was stunned that there was an 8 year old on site.  I did see one woman move up to her jewelry lickety split to kind of stand guard, but she heard K- and I discussing what she liked best about it, K- didn't reach out to grab or touch it, then the lady calmed down.  There were ladies with feathers in their hair and in gorgeous dresses, walking around with trays of delicious looking bites.  We didn't take advantage, since being wine bar adjacent, I didn't know if anything had liquor drizzle that K- shouldn't have.  Julia took the lead, K- followed and I pulled up the rear.  It appeared as though we were the only ones checking the art out at that particular point and even took in a moment with the ladies on tall pedestals holding empty frames in front of their faces.  We trouped through the adjoining gallery, gave Matt a wave and off we went.  When we arrived home, K- said, "Mom!  That was fun!  We need to do that again."  It was just us girls out taking in some art.  It wasn't a bad thing.

After K- had shuffled off to bed, I noticed a text on my phone.  It was from Julia.  She said that she had fun.  The text left me stunned.  She went on today to talk with me some more about it.  She said that being with K- was really rather enjoyable.  She and her husband don't have children and admit that they don't particularly care too much for the younger set outside of those directly related to them.  "She was like a little adult."  "Oh, she can be all kid, but she's grown up going to museums, galleries and shows, so they are places that she knows how to function at."  "I'm sure that she can be a kid, but I had a nice time with her.  I loved it that she picked out her dress and everything!"  I think that she was surprised that K- actually looked at the art.

Later on, Matt stopped me.  He thanked me for coming to his show and said that he was surprised to see K-.  "Well, I know that she was the only kid there and I think it stunned a few people, but she knows how to deal with it and I wasn't worried."  I told him that we would attend shows more often, I don't mean to be brain dead about these things, but he has to tell me when he has a function.  "I don't mean it that I need an engraved invitation, but often, I just don't know."  He promised to let me know.

I was thrilled.  I was happy that people were happy to hang out with my kid in an adult setting and that she wasn't that obnoxious kid that people go home talking about.  We've spent many hours looking for hair up the nose of busts, looking to see if we could see sculptures with no bras or underpants on and proving to the docents that no, my child won't be out of hand.  We've looked for paintings with particular colors, fine jewels that we would like to own and to see what suit of armor we would like to wear.  We've checked out furniture, looked at art from different lands and have talked about objects that pre-date Christ.  She is the kid of an artist.  It is a blessing.  I'm sure it can be a curse.  Any way she goes, a little culture sure isn't killing her.

Tales from the Trenches: Yellow hello!

The pollen.  Oh dear me.  The pollen.  My vehicle is a lovely red.  Well, it was.  Now it is a yellowish orange.

Pollen.

My people are taking their allergy meds (thank you God for those) and sometimes pollen is just too much for what the meds can do.

:snuffle:

I understand.

We still do our 2 1/2 mile walk/ride each night.  K- has now started taking the neighbor girl with us, which is a great motivator for K-.  When we have no E-, there is a lot of whining.  I'm glad to take E- any night she wants to go.  Yesterday, we had high winds.  The girls pushed with their little leggins up the big ole fat hills against the wind (yes, you can thank me for that Bob Seger earworm later) and no whining whatsoever.

I do think that they probably slept well.

Hubs and I have found that keeping up with the girls has increased our exercise level and dear sweet love, I was walking like an osteoporotic woman yesterday because my hips, butt and thighs hurt so badly.  Good times.

My foot started hurting.

We pressed on.

In other news, I've found plenty of other volunteer tomatoes in the beds.  Of course, I didn't realize what that batch of "weeds" were last night until AFTER I plucked most of them.  Oops.  That's okay.  I left the 1/10 behind that I didn't get in the first swipe and even gave them a lovely watering.

The seeds that I planted in my greenhouse last week are coming up.  So far, the Marvels of Peru are winning.  I still have portulaca that I seeded sitting on the wait to be transplanted.  Ground cherries, nicotiana and some pear tomatoes are peeking up.  I'm still waiting for the jasper and sweetie tomatoes, as well as the mini bell peppers.  They will all pop up in time.

Now if you'll excuse me, my bathroom required a bit of a bleach spray down this AM, as the vinegar, baking soda and Bon Ami weren't really going to do the trick on the grout.  Must press on and get it scrubbed before work.

Good day, all!

Spring break-less.

K- has been on spring break this week.  We, unlike classmates and others we know, did not go on vacation.  This isn't against anyone who could get away.  That's a great thing.  I have a friend who, though there was a family death expected and it in fact occurred, she was able to sneak away for a bit of time here and there that was somewhat enjoyable.

We pressed on and worked as usual.  That's certainly okay, as there are bills to pay and that kind of needed done.  Well, at least the city taxes had to be filed.

What did we do?

Thursday, 4/5:  K- had school, but afterwards, we went forth for the chop.  Both of us are delighted with our cuts.

Friday, 4/6:  I know that we did a bit of running and I don't recall exactly what.  I do know, however, that K- and I spent a good amount of time filling 350 eggs for the family hunt.  We also attended evening service.

Saturday, 4/7:  The egg hunts.  We had one for church and one for family.  They were lovely and exhaustively took up the entire day.

Sunday, 4/8:  Easter bunny.  Did he arrive?  That was the question posed to me by my sweet thing at 6:20 AM.  I think that I grunted and lifted the covers for her to climb in.  Jar Jar Binks woke her up when she accidentally rolled over his voice activation button on his hand.  We had a lovely service, brunch at church, lunch at my parents with my sibs and an early dinner at the in-law's.  We came home, went for a walk and K- was able to use her new bike.

Monday, 4/9:  Hubs wanted to take K- fishing out on the boat, but 44 degrees didn't sing real well for fish willing to bite, so they had a Star Wars Festival at home.  All went well until I received a call from Hubs panicking because K- accidentally ripped the cape off the vintage Darth Vader.  Yes, my husband called me at work about that.  In the end, it was all an accident, Hubs apologized to K- for being upset and we've all learned that the vintage Star Wars cannot be undressed like the Barbies can be.

Tuesday, 4/10:  K- and my MIL went to the movies.  They saw the Lorax.  Once again, K- won an iPod (generic) from the grabber machine.  The other she had stopped working, so she replaced it.  In the meantime, I still have a Hello Kitty iPod sitting to given out.  Obviously, K- doesn't need it.

Wednesday, 4/11:  K- went to hang with my MIL again.  They had a grand time, of course, as most of the school days K- has to do homework and reading.  That takes away from their fun time.  In the evening, we had plans to meet up at a kiddie indoor wonderland AKA Fun N' Stuff to hang with her siblings.  They ran around and had a great time together.  K- misses hanging with them, so the time of play was great.

Thursday, 4/12:  My sister was scheduled to have her colonoscopy (all went well!), so I signed up to bring dinner.  I made a breakfast casserole (egg strata or egg pie as LeAnne calls it), muffins and a fruit salad.  She wanted something a bit low level since she had just cleared all the piping out to squeak status.  K- and I also had a dental appointment (scheduled it so far ahead that I didn't know it was spring break until the week ahead) and both of us came through with flying colors.  Hooray!

Friday, 4/13:  We were on a mission.  K- and I hit the thrift stores for some dresses.  We were on the hunt.  We purchased 4 dresses or so, a handful of books, a game and a polymer clay kit.  We hung out at my cousins house for bit and played.  K- was able to play with the neighbor for a while and we went on another walk.  At this point, we've been doing those for a couple of weeks now and are pretty good at getting out for the nightly walk about 6 nights a week.

Saturday, 4/14:  We had our lovely Lowe's Build and Grow workshop, jetted off to the local university for swimming lessons and now we're back home crafting for a bit.  We made some beads with the polymer clay set that we found and we'll be stringing our beads in just a bit.  K- is having quite a lovely time beating the clay with a spoon.  I made mine in more even sizes, but hers are kind of all over the place with size.  We'll see how they bake.

Sunday, 4/15:  The start of soccer season!  We're holding our breath, since opening day appears to be one possibly filled with thunderstorms.  A friend loaned a pair of brand new soccer shoes to K- (I tried to decline and she insisted saying that she found them at Target sinfully cheap), she had some shorts (I feared that they might go south while she was running) but I found another pair for a buck at the thrift.  The little girl that she watches will be thrilled to take K-'s old bike as a play bike at her house and we're thrilled with that.  More stuff we don't need shuttled off to lands with a need.  I also passed on a good 25 pairs of K-'s underwear that were just replaced with the next size up.  No, she doesn't need 30 pair of underwear, but my MIL buys underwear all the time.  At least we found a behindy to put those on, as well.

I hope that you've had a wonderful week and I'm certain that you could care less to give a hoot as to what we were doing or where we were going.  That's all good.  At least I killed a few minutes for you, right?  ;)

Have a great day!

My husband listens to death metal. I don't. AKA the post about the Rock Hall Induction this weekend and the people in my CD collection who aren't included.

That Metal Show refers to the Rock Hall as the "Hall of Shame."  Now, I don't fully agree, though I do believe (and know) that there are many people who should be in there who aren't.  I mean, how can you leave out Iron Maiden when they are one of the most influential rock bands or Rush who did get their start in Cleveland when no one else would play them?

I had started this post back on September 2, 2010.  I don't really recall why I did, but since it was there, I decided to check dates to see who qualified.  1987 is the magical qualifying year, as it has to be 25 years from the first record.  (I went by the years listed on Wikipedia, so they may be band inception dates as opposed to records.  I'm not certain.)  For whatever it is worth, here is my list and my sadness that they haven't been put up for induction.  Please understand, too, that I wouldn't necessarily put each and every single one of these bands up for Rock Hall Induction, but most of them I would love for them to consider.

Please know that the bands who are crossed out don't qualify date-wise for induction.

I'm thinking that I got everyone, but feel that I may have missed a few.  At any rate, do you have anyone that you would have loved to see included?  Any major oversights in the Rock Hall?  Do tell!

ETA:  And because it seems like Axl Rose doesn't like to share the stage with anyone or have anyone possibly upstage him, he has declined his portion of the nomination to the Rock Hall with specification that he not be given the induction in absentia or have anyone speak on his behalf.  Hmm.  Does this ranting tantrum stink of what happened with him when James Hetfield stepped into stage pyrotechnics and Axl threw a fit when James had to be transported to the hospital?  Hmmm.  Axl, get over yourself.

We've been walking.

I admit that I've been a bit off with my posting, since we've been busy walking each night. I do have updates, though.

1. K- brought her grades up to all A's and one B. We were so proud! Truly, she works very hard.
2. We went to the Tenebrae service at church and it was very moving. I hope that I spelled that right.
3. We enjoyed Easter egg hunts on Saturday. We had one at church and one with my sister's family.
4. K- was delighted with the new bike she received for Easter. We explained that the bunny doesn't usually bring big gifts like that, but he noticed that she had grown out of hers.
5. K- has a date tomorrow with her siblings. She is very excited to see them!
6. We had delightful dinners on Sunday with our families. It was nice that we could all make it to my parents house at the same time.
7. It was nice to get to talk to my SIL on Sunday. We haven't been able to talk in a while.
8. Our garden veggies are doing fine, despite the continual shift of weather. It was snowing today.
9. K- starts back to soccer on Sunday and putting her in a league not in our incredibly sports obsessed subsection of the city isn't a bad thing. Wow. It is eat or be eaten and we're not for that.
10. I'm pleased to say that I'm at the 10 pound mark and happy with that. Of course, diet blew out of the window on Sunday. Oops.

Chop, chop.

My daughter made a request last week.  "Mom, I'd like to get my hair cut so that I can donate it."  We talked about it and she knew that her longity girl locks would be gone, as donation requires quite a bit of hairs.

She wanted to do it last Thursday.

They didn't have appointments then.  I figured that was okay, as it let her settle in on that choice for a week.  We rocked both of us a lovely appointment, as my hairs needed a donation chop, too.

Our heads are lighter.  Hers is 12" lighter and her hair ended up just below her shoulders.  (Girlfriend was rockin' hair to her waist.)  My hair got a 9" chop and it is about shoulder length.  Mind you, it is curly and has a mind of its own.  Somedays it seems longer than others.

Still, K-'s hair will go to Locks of Love.  My hair (actually 2 pony tails since I had one that I neglected to send in-- forgot!) will be going to Pantene Beautiful Lengths.  Do you know what my kiddo wants to do?  She wants to grow it all out and do the rinse and repeat.  Bless her heart.  She knows that the hair goes to kids without hair and she is delighted to help.  She has a heaping helping of hair up top, and I'm glad that she made the decision on her own to donate.

I know, I know.  Y'all want photos, but you know I don't post kiddo's face on the internet!  Trust me, she's cutie patootie.

Have a great weekend!

Apparently the bus driver doesn't want me to block the road with my body.

Because the decision has come back that the bus cannot stop at the first corner due to all of the children living on the other side of it, it has left the bus stopping at the same place.  I came up with a solution.

Block the road by standing in the "ditch" space where the lady skinnies in behind the bus until after all the children have gotten on and are ready to press on the to next stop.

I did that today, all the kids got on, then I heard the squeak of the bus brake.  "Hey, she wants to talk to you!" is what the one kid yelled.  I came up to the steps and the bus driver, a rather tall and large woman, is laughing at me (the more petite frame) standing guard at the back of the bus. She offered to stop a bit further past the stop so that I don't have to stand guard.

Maybe I needed to stand guard behind the bus a while ago.
